An Autistic Girl’s Guide to Summer Holidays

It’s the middle of July, which means lots of people are heading off on summer holidays. For autistic people, holidays can be difficult for various reasons, for example due to…

  • changes in routine

  • managing the unknown and uncertainty

  • different foods

  • travel may be overwhelming or anxiety-provoking due to noise or crowds

  • not being able to take everything that is comforting e.g. weighted blankets

  • difficulty with temperature change and regulation

  • sensory sensitivities to suncream, water, sand, bright sun, clothes etc

  • increased demands to socialise or go out or participate in different activities

Here are some of things which have helped me!

Suncream mists which are worth trying are the Garnier Ambre Solaire dry mist, the Soltan Suncare clear and cool protect mist and the Nivea sun protect and dry touch mist.

Remember that you are ALWAYS allowed to make your own adjustments and advocate for your needs. It’s your holiday too, so it should be as stress-free for you as possible, and sometimes the littlest of adjustments make the biggest differences!

If you are going away, I hope you have a lovely time.

GIRL UNMASKED (The Sunday Times Bestseller) is available to order from Amazon and all major bookstores as a hardback, paperback, audiobook and ebook.
